Fourteen women from the islands of Ambae, Malekula, the Maskelynes, Ambrym, Tanna, Pentecost and Tanna came from the 1st to the 12th December to the Handicrafts Centre at ACTIV to follow workshops on reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, basic business, climate change, nutrition and agriculture.
The next training session is planned for February 2015. The women will also come with their beautiful handicrafts that will be displayed at the Handicrafts Centre. |
Vanuatu Cocoa Growers Target the Fine Chocolate MarketPosted 25 November 2014
Verity Edwards, journalist for the Australian, recounts the chocolate competition hosted by ACTIV last month. In December, ACTIV will be opening Vanuatu's first chocolate factory, sourcing cocoa beans from small-scale cocoa growers in Malekula, Epi and Santo islands.

Last week, ACTIV showcased to our neighbours in Nouméa, local agricultural and artesian products from Vanuatu during the Wik Blong Vanuatu. Local New Caledonians had the opportunity to experience Vanuatu's unique culture by visiting ACTIV's market stall and purchasing handicrafts, vanilla, oils, cocoa and much more!

ACTIV'S Becoming Fair Trade!

After meeting with our friends at Fairtrade (FTAANZ), we are happy to start the process of certifying our cocoa growers. Aelan Chocolate Makers™ will then use these certified beans to produce local chocolate, so you can be sure that the farmers that produced the cocoa will receive a fair share of the price that you pay!

Congratulations to the three winners of the Salon Culinaire chocolate competition, Fred Sandy from Bisal Coop. on Malekula, Denis Nambith from Rory village on Malekula and Joseph Merib from Epi Farmers' Association.

On 15 October, ACTIV participated in a women's workshop organised by the Department of Women's Affairs in celebration of International Rural Women's Day in Lakatoro on Malekula island. Participating women learned about how they can access markets with the products they make, product development and the importance of quality.

The Handicraft Centre will be officially open on October 4th! Come and visit the producers of wonderful handicrafts and carvings from other islands in Vanuatu, open 6 days a week.

Cocoa producers from around the islands of Vanuatu will be put to the test in our chocolate competition on Thursday 23rd October at the Salon Culinaire at Chantilly's Hotel. Chocolate makers from overseas will judge ten different sources of cocoa beans from the islands of Malekula, Epi and Santo. May the best chocolate win!
